This feature allows you to add domains (website addresses) to your account. You can enter your domains to take your website live and setup redirects to subpages. You must be the primary account owner to be able to view this Account tab.
NOTE: Please make sure to read the 'Modifying DNS' section below!
Quick Menu
Why add multiple domains to your site?
You can add as many domains as you would like to your account. Your primary domain is the one that your website visitors will see anytime they visit your website. But you may have secondary domains that point to your home page, or to an internal page on your site.
Example:
- madebyspeak.com is our Primary Domain
- speakcreative.com is a Secondary domain -- when someone types in speakcreative.com, it redirects to the home page of madebyspeak.com
- You could set up speakcreative.com to point to an internal page, like madebyspeak.com/digital-agency.
- You could also set up a subdomain to point to any page on your site. In this case, sitewrench.com is a primary domain, and support.sitewrench.com is the subdomain, where "support" is considered the subdomain.
Adding Domains to Your Account
- Access the 'Account Settings' link in the upper right hand area of the system.
- Next, within the 'My Domains' area click the 'Add Domain' link.
- Click the 'Add a Domain' link to add a new domain to your account. You can enter your domain and then select the initial page it should load. If this is your main website address, select your 'Home' page (or if you have renamed your home page - select it). If this domain should redirect to another subpage on your site, select that page. You can also set the domain to route to a 'Coming Soon' page or an external URL such as google.com.
- Click the 'Add' button to save your new domain setting or cancel to exit.
Editing Domains in Your Account
- Access the 'Account' link in the upper right hand area of the system.
- Next, within the 'My Domains' area adjust the dropdown beside each domain to update the where the domain routes.
- Click Save.
To delete domains in your account:
- Access the 'Account' link in the upper right hand area of the system.
- Next, within the 'My Domains' area, click the 'Delete' link to the right of the domain you are wanting to remove from your account.
- NOTE: If you are removing the domain and want to transfer the domain into your control, submit a support ticket or email us at gethelp@sitewrench.com to let us know which domain(s) and we will gladly assist you.
Modify Your DNS Information
If you are wanting to point a domain to us, as mentioned in any of the steps above, the domain's DNS must be changed. DNS is the system that directs all Internet traffic to the right servers based on a system of names and IP addresses. The changes discussed in the steps below will take your site live by routing your web traffic to our servers. Keep in mind once DNS changes are made, typically it takes up to 24 hours to see your site become live. Some DNS Servers and Registry's update very quickly and others take the full 24 hours. With this being said, you could see your site live in the office the day we make the switch, but you might go home and not see your live site yet. This is simply due to the way that DNS propagates around the world, which is why we state the 24 hours.
DNS Management
Your choices for DNS management are as follows:
Option #1: We manage DNS for your domain
YOU MUST LET US KNOW IN ADVANCE THAT YOU WILL CHOOSE THIS OPTION. FAILURE TO DO SO WILL RESULT IN YOUR WEBSITE, EMAIL, AND ANY CUSTOM SERVERS GOING DOWN FOR 1 - 24 HOURS.
This is so we can setup our side before you switch your DNS to us, else your email and site will go down, and could be down for up to 24 hours! Also, make sure you have followed the steps above to enter your domains within the system before proceeding with the steps below.
Under this scenario, you make us the DNS authority for your domain. Through your domain registrar (e.g., Network Solutions, Go Daddy, Yahoo Domains, etc), you specify our servers listed below for your primary and secondary DNS servers. This makes us the authority for your DNS, which simply means we will setup the required records to route your web traffic, your email traffic, and other traffic. Look for the section called "DNS" or "Name Servers". Once inside, change your Primary and Secondary Name servers to the following:
Primary Name Server ns.rackspace.com
Secondary Name Server ns2.rackspace.com
Option #2: You Manage Your Own DNS
Under this scenario you are using another DNS management solution to route traffic where it needs to go. You are responsible for proper setup. Make sure you have followed the steps above to enter your domains within the system before proceeding with this step.
You will simply change your web traffic (A record), within your DNS, to point to our IP which is displayed to the primary account owner within your site's account settings area.
- Create (or change) an "A Record" to point your www domain (ex: www.yourdomain.com) to 40.119.1.254
- Create (or change) an "A Record" to point your naked domain (ex: yourdomain.com) to 40.119.1.254
yourdomain.com 300 IN A 40.119.1.254 www.yourdomain.com 300 IN A 40.119.1.254
You will have approximately 1 - 24 hours until your site starts to receive traffic from the world and DNS propagation can take up to 72 hours to complete. Often DNS propagates sooner than 24 hours.
